Most turnover problems are not about how hard someone scrubbed. They come from setup and habits that make the job harder than it needs to be. We see the same handful of mistakes again and again. If you are working with a cleaner, these pair well with How to Work With an Airbnb Cleaner (and Keep Them).
None of them mean a host does not care. They usually come from starting fast, with one property, and never going back to build the system. Here are the turnover mistakes we see most often at rentals around Waxahachie, Ennis and across south DFW, and how to fix them.
Too few linens and no owner’s closet
This is the big one. With only one set of linens per bed, the beds cannot be made until the laundry is done. Every turnover becomes a wait for the dryer, and a slow dryer can push you past check-in.
Fix: Keep at least two full sets per bed and bathroom, and three if you have frequent same-day turnovers. It is one of the best investments a host can make, and white sets make it simple, since any sheet matches any pillowcase of the same size.
Without a locked closet, supplies get used up or borrowed by guests, and cleaners have to bring their own or work without. Spare linens get mixed in with guest blankets and sets go missing.
Fix: Set up a locked closet with backup supplies, spare linens labeled by bed size and a par list taped inside the door.
Too tight a gap between guests
A short gap with a large house is where turnovers go wrong. Hosts set check-in times based on the best case, not a heavy mess or a slow dryer.
Fix: Set check-in times that allow a normal turnover plus a cushion. If you need to offer early check-in, only do it after your cleaner confirms the house is ready.
Skipping photos and skipping updates
Without before and after photos, damage is hard to prove, complaints are hard to answer and quality is hard to check from afar.
Fix: Ask for photos of every room at the end of every turnover, and photos of any damage before cleaning starts. Keep them organized by date.
Early checkouts, late checkouts, extra guests, pets and same-day check-ins all change a turnover. When the cleaner finds out at the door, the whole day shifts.
Fix: Share your booking calendar and send updates as soon as you know. A quick text saves a lot of scrambling, and a shared calendar means your cleaner sees new bookings without waiting on you.
Too much decor and clutter
Every knickknack, decorative pillow and stack of books is something to dust, reset and check. Cluttered rentals take longer to turn over and look messier even when they are clean.
Fix: Keep decor simple and purposeful. A few nice pieces look better in photos and are faster to reset than a shelf of small items. Fewer things also means fewer things to break, go missing or need counting on every turnover.
Skipping deep cleans and small repairs
Turnovers alone do not reach baseboards, ceiling fans, grout or inside the oven. Over months, buildup becomes visible, and guests start to notice.
Fix: Schedule a deep clean between seasons. In North Texas, after pollen season and after a busy summer are natural times.
A leaky faucet, a broken blind or a vacuum that barely works all slow turnovers and show up in reviews. Cleaners can report them, but they cannot fix them.
Fix: Act on repair reports quickly. Keep a list of local handymen and repair services, especially if you live out of town. A small problem fixed this week is cheaper and easier than a bigger problem and a bad review next month. Give your cleaner a simple way to flag repairs, like a note in the turnover message, so nothing gets lost.
Changing the setup often
Moving furniture around, swapping decor and changing how beds are made every few weeks means nobody ever settles into a routine. The turnover never looks the same twice, and it never gets faster.
Fix: Pick a setup, photograph it and stick with it. Update your listing photos when you do make a change, and share the new standard with your cleaner.

None of these mistakes are hard to fix. A few extra linens, a locked closet, a good calendar habit and a commitment to photos solve most turnover problems. For how we run turnovers for hosts, see our short-term rental cleaning page.
