After cleaning a lot of apartments, we see the same mistakes again and again. They are not lazy mistakes. Most of them come from good intentions, like using a strong cleaner to get a stain out fast. In How to Keep Dust Down in a North Texas Apartment we covered dust. To finish this series, here are the most common apartment cleaning mistakes and how to avoid them.
Using the wrong product on rental fixtures
This is the big one. In an apartment, you do not own the counters, the floors or the fixtures, and some products can damage them for good.
- Vinegar and acidic cleaners can etch natural stone like marble and granite.
- Abrasive powders and scrub pads can scratch glass, acrylic tubs and stainless steel.
- Bleach can discolor some countertops, carpets and grout.
- Steam mops and too much water can damage laminate and some vinyl floors.
Always test a new product in a hidden spot first, and read the label. If you are not sure what a surface is, ask your leasing office.
Mixing cleaning products
Never mix cleaners, especially bleach with ammonia, vinegar or other acids. The fumes can be dangerous, and in a small apartment with poor airflow, they build up fast. Use one product at a time, rinse between products and keep a window open or the fan running. More product is not better, either. Too much cleaner leaves a sticky film that actually attracts dirt, so follow the label and rinse when it says to.
Cleaning in the wrong order
If you mop first and dust second, the dust falls on your clean floor. Always work top to bottom: ceiling fans, light fixtures and shelves first, counters and furniture next, and floors last. It sounds simple, but it saves a lot of time and repeated work.
A related mistake is spraying cleaner straight onto a TV, laptop or light switch, which can let liquid seep inside. Spray the cloth instead, then wipe.
Spraying straight onto a TV, laptop or light switch can let liquid seep inside. Spray the cloth instead, then wipe. The same goes for wood furniture and painted walls. Too much liquid can leave water marks or damage the finish.
Ignoring the hidden spots
The places you do not see every day are the places that build up the most.
- The top of the fridge and the tops of the kitchen cabinets.
- Under the bed and couch.
- Inside the microwave and the dishwasher filter.
- The range hood filter.
- The sliding door track and the window sills.
- The exhaust fan cover in the bathroom.
Add one or two of these to your routine each month so they never get out of hand.
Letting hard water and soap scum build up
In North Texas, hard water builds up fast. If you skip the shower for a few weeks, it turns from a quick wipe into a long scrub. A squeegee after each shower and a weekly vinegar wipe keep it at bay. Waiting until move-out to deal with months of buildup is one of the most common mistakes we see.
Using dirty tools
A dirty sponge spreads germs, a full vacuum just pushes dirt around and a gray mop head leaves streaks. Replace sponges often, wash microfiber cloths after each clean without fabric softener, empty the vacuum before you start and wash or replace mop heads regularly. Clean tools clean better.
Leaving move-out cleaning to the last minute
Move-out day is stressful, and cleaning often gets squeezed into the final few hours. That is when things get missed: inside the oven, inside cabinets, the blinds, behind the fridge. Plan the move-out clean as its own step, ideally after the apartment is empty. Give it a full day for a one-bedroom if you are doing it yourself, and book help early if you want it, since the end of the month is a busy time for move-outs. Read your lease and ask your leasing office what they expect. Take photos when you are done.
Trying to do it all at once
Saving all the cleaning for one marathon day leads to burnout and skipped jobs. Small daily habits and one or two bigger jobs per week keep a small apartment clean without taking over your weekend. A ten-minute evening reset does more over a month than one exhausting Saturday. If it still feels like too much, getting help for the bigger jobs is a smart choice, not a failure.
We clean apartments for renters across Waxahachie, Midlothian and the south DFW area. If you want a fresh start or regular help, we are happy to take the heavy lifting off your plate.
Pick one or two of these mistakes to fix this week, and add another next week. Small changes, like working top to bottom or keeping a squeegee in the shower, quickly become habits you never think about.
