The Room-by-Room Deep Cleaning Checklist

That Cleaning Girl · Deep Cleaning

A checklist turns a deep clean from an overwhelming project into a list you can actually finish. This is close to the one we follow in homes around Waxahachie and Midlothian, written so you can use it yourself. If you're still deciding what kind of clean you need, read Deep Clean vs. Regular Clean: What's the Difference? first.

Before you start any room

Gather everything in one caddy so you aren't walking back to the laundry room every ten minutes. Then follow two rules in every room: top to bottom, and dry before wet. Dust and vacuum first, then wipe and scrub, then do the floors last. Open a window or run a fan if you're using stronger cleaners.

  • Microfiber cloths, a scrub pad, a small brush and a toothbrush.
  • All-purpose cleaner, degreasing dish soap, glass cleaner and white vinegar.
  • Vacuum with attachments, a bucket and mop, a step stool and gloves.

One more thing before you dive in: pick up first. A deep clean goes much faster when the counters, floors and nightstands are clear. Do a quick lap with a laundry basket and collect anything that doesn't belong in the room you're cleaning. Put it away later. Cleaning around clutter is how a four-hour job turns into an eight-hour one, and it's the reason so many people give up halfway through the kitchen.

Kitchen checklist

  • Dust the tops of cabinets, the top of the fridge and light fixtures.
  • Degrease the range hood and soak its filter in hot soapy water.
  • Wipe cabinet fronts, handles and the edges where hands grab.
  • Clean the backsplash and the wall behind the stove.
  • Scrub the stovetop, burner grates, knobs and drip pans.
  • Wipe the outside of every appliance, including the microwave inside.
  • Clean the sink, faucet, drain and the gunk line around the base.
  • Wipe counters last, after crumbs from above have fallen.
  • Extras: inside the oven, inside the fridge, inside cabinets.

Bathroom checklist

  • Dust the exhaust fan cover, light fixture and the top of the mirror.
  • Spray the tub and shower walls and let the cleaner sit.
  • Treat hard water spots on glass, faucets and the showerhead.
  • Scrub grout lines and the corners where scum collects.
  • Clean the toilet top to bottom, including the hinges and the base.
  • Wipe the vanity, cabinet fronts, mirror and towel bars.
  • Detail the faucet and drain with a toothbrush.
  • Clean the floor, especially behind the toilet.
Tip: spray the shower first and clean the rest of the bathroom while it soaks. You come back to a shower that needs half the scrubbing.

Bedroom checklist

  • Dust the ceiling fan, light fixtures and vents.
  • Dust the tops of door frames, tall dressers and shelves.
  • Wipe down doors, door handles and switch plates.
  • Dust blinds and wipe window sills and tracks.
  • Dust nightstands, lamps, headboards and picture frames.
  • Vacuum the mattress if the bed is stripped, and vacuum under the bed.
  • Wipe baseboards by hand.
  • Extras: change linens, interior windows.
Tip: pull the bed a few inches from the wall before you vacuum. The gap behind the headboard collects more dust and lost socks than anywhere else in the room.

Living room and dining room checklist

  • Fan blades, light fixtures and vents first.
  • Dust shelves, decor, TV stands and electronics with a dry cloth.
  • Vacuum couches and chairs, including under the cushions.
  • Wipe the dining table, chair legs and rungs.
  • Dust blinds, sills and tracks, and wipe the glass on patio doors.
  • Wipe baseboards, door frames and switch plates.

Laundry room, entry and hallways

These spaces get skipped the most and show it. The laundry room collects lint on every surface, and the entry collects red-clay mud after every North Texas rain.

  • Wipe the top and front of the washer and dryer, plus the lint trap area.
  • Dust shelves and wipe cabinet fronts.
  • Wipe the front door, the inside of the door frame and the threshold.
  • Clean hallway baseboards and the scuff marks at kid and pet height.

Floors, everywhere, at the end

  • Vacuum every room, including edges with a crevice tool.
  • Move light furniture to vacuum underneath, then put it back.
  • Mop hard floors, starting at the far corner and working toward the door.
  • Spot-scrub grout at entry doors and in front of the kitchen sink.
  • Change mop water whenever it turns cloudy.

If you live with other people, split the checklist. One person takes the kitchen while another does bathrooms, and everyone meets up for floors at the end. A shared list keeps it fair and means nobody gets stuck with every bathroom in the house.

Making the checklist work for you

You don't need to do every room in one day. Plenty of people spread a deep clean across a weekend: kitchen and bathrooms Saturday, bedrooms and floors Sunday. Print the list, tape it to the fridge and check things off as you go. It sounds silly, but crossing off a line is a real motivator when you're three hours in and the baseboards are still waiting.

Keep the list after you finish, too. Next time you deep clean, you'll know which spots took the longest and which ones barely needed attention. That tells you where to focus during regular cleaning so the next deep clean is easier. The checklist keeps you from missing anything, and the order keeps you from doing anything twice. If you'd rather we handle it, our deep cleaning services page explains what's included and how booking works.
