Keeping a Home Office Clean When You Work From Home

That Cleaning Girl · Office Cleaning

Not every office is on Main Street. A lot of people around Waxahachie, Midlothian and south DFW run a business or work remotely from a spare bedroom, a corner of the living room or a converted garage. After a big office reset like the one in Deep Cleaning an Office: When a Regular Clean Isn't Enough, it's worth giving the home office some love too.

Home offices get dirty in their own way. You eat lunch at the desk, the dog naps under it, and the mail piles up on the corner. Here's how to keep it clean and comfortable.

Start with clutter

Clutter is the biggest obstacle to a clean home office. It's hard to dust a desk covered with mail, notebooks, chargers and three coffee mugs.

  • Give everything a home: a tray for mail, a drawer for supplies, a basket for chargers.
  • Take dishes back to the kitchen at the end of every day.
  • Recycle junk mail as soon as it comes in.
  • Keep only what you use every day on the desk itself.

A cleared desk takes seconds to wipe. A cluttered one never gets wiped at all.

The desk, keyboard and mouse

Your desk and keyboard get more use than almost anything in your house.

  • Dust the desk, monitor and lamp weekly.
  • Wipe the desk surface with a cleaner suited to the material.
  • Turn the keyboard upside down and gently tap out crumbs.
  • Wipe keys and the mouse with a barely damp cloth or an electronics wipe.
  • Wipe your phone according to the manufacturer's guidance.
  • Clean your monitor with a dry microfiber cloth, or one barely dampened with water.
Tip: Keep a microfiber cloth in your desk drawer. A two-minute wipe on Friday afternoon keeps dust from building up all week.

Cords, chargers and the floor under the desk

The area under the desk is where dust bunnies, pet hair and lost pens go to live. Cords make it hard to clean, so:

  • Bundle cords with ties or a cord box.
  • Lift the power strip off the floor if you can, so you can vacuum underneath.
  • Vacuum under the desk weekly.
  • Use a chair mat on carpet, and vacuum under it now and then.

Dust, pollen and pets

Home offices in North Texas get the same dust and pollen as everywhere else. Spare bedrooms used as offices often have windows that collect pollen in spring and blinds that collect dust all year.

Pets add their own layer. If your dog or cat keeps you company while you work, expect hair on the chair, the rug and the floor under the desk. A lint roller in the desk drawer and a regular vacuum help a lot.

Lighting, air and comfort

A clean office is also a more comfortable one. Dust the light fixtures and lamps, wipe the window sills and keep the vent clear of boxes so air can move. If your home office is in a room that gets hot in summer, a fan helps, but dust the fan blades regularly so it isn't blowing dust onto your desk.

A simple weekly routine

Here's a routine that takes about fifteen minutes a week:

  • Clear the desk and put things away.
  • Dust the desk, monitor, shelves and window sill.
  • Wipe the desk, keyboard, mouse and phone.
  • Empty the trash and recycling.
  • Vacuum or sweep, including under the desk.
  • Take any dishes back to the kitchen.

Do it on Friday afternoon and you'll start every Monday with a clean desk.

When to get help

If you're running a business from home, your time is worth a lot. Many people who work from home add their home office to a regular house cleaning so it gets dusted, vacuumed and wiped along with the rest of the house. Others have a small studio or a separate outbuilding that gets cleaned like any small office.

If clients ever visit your home office, it's even more important that it looks professional. A clean entry, a tidy desk, a clean guest restroom and a vacuumed floor go a long way toward making a good impression, even if the rest of the house is lived in.

A home office in a spare bedroom often shares a hallway and a restroom with the rest of the house. If those spaces stay clean, the office feels more like a workplace and less like a corner of the laundry pile. That separation helps a lot of people focus.

And if you rent a small office or studio outside your home, even a tiny one, it deserves the same attention as your home office. Small spaces get dusty fast, especially when nobody is there every day.
