Paying for Maid Service With a Card on File

That Cleaning Girl · Weekly & Bi-Weekly Maid Service

Once cleaning day runs smoothly, there is one more piece: paying. If you want the full cleaning-day rundown, see The On-the-Way Text: What to Expect on Cleaning Day. This guide covers how payment works for recurring service and why a card on file is the easiest way to handle it.

How a card on file works

When you start recurring service, you add a card for online payment. After each visit, the cost of that visit is charged to the card. That is all there is to it.

You do not need to be home. You do not need to leave cash or a check on the counter. You do not need to remember anything. It just happens on its own while you get on with your week.

Payment is handled online through a standard card payment system, the same kind you use when you shop online. Your card number is not written on a piece of paper or kept in a notebook, which is one more advantage over leaving checks around or texting payment details to someone.

Why it beats cash and checks

Leaving cash or a check for a cleaner sounds simple, but it causes more problems than people expect:

  • You forget. Busy mornings mean the check gets left in your purse or the cash never makes it to the counter.
  • It is awkward. Leaving money on the counter of an empty house is not ideal.
  • It is hard to track. Cash payments do not leave much of a record for your budget.
  • It slows everyone down. Checks have to be written, picked up and deposited.

A card on file solves all of that. The payment happens on its own, and you have a clear record of each visit.

It is also better for your cleaner. Nobody has to hunt around the kitchen for an envelope, wonder whether the check was forgotten or leave a note asking about it. Everyone can focus on the clean itself, which is how it should be.

What gets charged

Each visit is charged based on your quoted price for your home and schedule. If you add an extra — inside the fridge, inside the oven, baseboards — that visit includes the extra. If you rotate extras through your visits, the charge changes on the visits that include them.

What affects the price in general is your home size, number of bedrooms and bathrooms, how often you book, the condition of the house and extras. Your quote spells out what your regular visit costs, so there are no guesses.

Updating your card

Cards expire, get lost or get replaced after a fraud alert. When that happens, just let us know and update the card on file before your next visit. A declined card is not the end of the world, but it is easier to update it ahead of time than to sort it out after a visit.

Tip: When your bank sends you a new card, add a reminder to update it everywhere you have recurring payments — streaming services, utilities and your cleaner. It saves a lot of little headaches.

Skipped or moved visits

You are charged for visits that happen. If you skip or move a visit — for a holiday, a vacation or a lake weekend — just let us know ahead of time. The earlier you tell us, the easier it is for everyone, and it gives us time to work around your change.

Questions about a charge

If anything about a charge looks off, just reach out and ask. Maybe an extra was added that you did not mean to request, or you want to understand what a visit included. It is always easier to clear things up quickly than to wonder about it.

The same goes for changes to your service. If you switch from every two weeks to weekly, add a regular extra like changing linens or drop one you no longer need, your charges follow the new plan. Ask anytime if you want to know how a change would affect the cost of a visit.

Budgeting for recurring cleaning

One nice side effect of recurring service with a card on file is that it makes budgeting easy. Your regular visit costs the same every time, and you know how often it happens. Weekly, bi-weekly, every three weeks or monthly, you can plan for it like any other monthly bill. Extras are the only variable, and you choose when to add them.
