Post-Construction Cleaning Checklist: Room by Room

That Cleaning Girl · Post-Construction Cleaning

The best way to avoid missing a spot in a post-construction clean is to stop relying on memory and work from a list. That one habit prevents most of the problems in Common Post-Construction Cleaning Mistakes and How to Avoid Them. Here is the room-by-room checklist we work from, adapted so you can use it yourself or check a finished clean against it.

Every room, every time

Start each room with these, working top to bottom:

  • Dust ceilings and corners
  • Clean ceiling fans and light fixtures
  • Wipe vent covers and returns
  • Dust the tops of door frames, window frames and trim
  • Dry dust, then damp wipe walls where needed
  • Clean doors, frames and door hardware
  • Wipe switch plates and outlet covers
  • Remove stickers, labels and protective film
  • Spot-remove paint specks where safe
  • Clean window glass, sills and tracks
  • Wipe baseboards
  • Vacuum floors thoroughly, then damp mop hard floors

These steps happen in every room. The lists below are what to add for each specific space. The order matters as much as the list itself. If you dust a fan after vacuuming, you will vacuum again. If you wipe a counter before emptying the cabinets above it, you will wipe it again. Top to bottom, inside to outside, floors last.

Kitchen

  • Range hood, outside and filters
  • Backsplash, including grout haze and caulk smears
  • Cabinet tops, then insides of every cabinet and drawer
  • Cabinet fronts and hardware
  • Appliance film and labels removed
  • Refrigerator and freezer inside and out
  • Oven, cooktop and microwave inside and out
  • Dishwasher wiped out and run empty
  • Countertops cleaned with a surface-safe product
  • Sink, faucet and sprayer cleaned and dried
  • Pantry shelves vacuumed and wiped
  • Behind and under appliances if safely accessible
Tip: Do the kitchen cabinets before the counters. Every bit of dust you clear out of a cabinet lands on the counter below it.

Bathrooms

  • Exhaust fan cover cleaned
  • Vanity light and mirror cleaned, stickers removed
  • Shower glass cleaned and labels removed
  • Tile walls and floor cleaned, grout haze removed
  • Caulk smears lifted carefully
  • Tub or shower base cleaned with a non-abrasive product
  • Faucets, showerhead and handles cleaned and dried
  • Vanity inside and out, countertop and sink cleaned
  • Toilet inside and out, including the base and hinges
  • Medicine cabinet and linen closet wiped
  • Floor vacuumed, then mopped

Bedrooms, closets and laundry

  • Closet shelves, rods and floors vacuumed and wiped
  • Closet doors and tracks cleaned
  • Window blinds or shades dusted
  • Carpet vacuumed slowly in several directions
  • Any built-ins wiped inside and out
  • Ceiling fan blades wiped top and bottom
  • Window tracks vacuumed and wiped

Bedrooms tend to be the quickest rooms, but closets are often where trim cutting and shelf installation leave the most sawdust. Check the corners of the closet floor and the top shelf.

Living areas and hallways

  • Fireplace surround and mantel dusted and wiped
  • Built-in shelving cleaned
  • Stair rails, spindles and treads dusted and wiped
  • Sliding door tracks vacuumed and cleaned
  • Entry door threshold cleaned
  • Hall closets cleaned

Two-story entries and stairwells collect a surprising amount of dust on high ledges and light fixtures, so plan time and the right tools for those.

Laundry room:

  • Cabinets and shelves inside and out
  • Washer and dryer wiped, labels removed
  • Inside the washer drum and dryer drum wiped
  • Utility sink cleaned if there is one
  • Floor vacuumed, including behind appliances if accessible

Garage, porch and patio

  • Walls and shelves dusted
  • Door to the house cleaned
  • Light fixtures and opener buttons wiped
  • Slab swept or vacuumed
  • Front door, porch light and porch swept and wiped
  • Back patio swept and patio door glass cleaned

Garages on new builds are often the dustiest space in the house. Builders use them as a workshop and storage area for weeks, so expect sawdust in every corner. In our area they also tend to collect red clay from the job site, which is easiest to sweep up once it is completely dry.

After the clean

A few final steps make the whole clean last longer:

  1. Replace the HVAC filter.
  2. Run the HVAC fan for a while to pull loose dust into the filter.
  3. Do a quick final walk with a flashlight held low across floors and counters.
  4. Note any repair items for the punch list.
  5. Put down mats at every exterior door.

Keep the list handy

A checklist turns a big, messy job into a set of small, doable steps. Use it to do the clean yourself, or to check a clean before the walkthrough. Print it, tape it to the fridge and tick items off as you go. It is surprisingly satisfying, and nothing gets forgotten. For homes around Midlothian, Waxahachie and nearby, our post-construction cleaning service covers every item on it.
